Italy has reached a new milestone in European patent activity. According to the latest figures from the European Patent Office (EPO), Italian companies and inventors filed 4,767 European patent applications in 2025, placing Italy among the top ten countries worldwide for the first time.
While this represents a slight decrease compared with the 4,853 applications filed in 2024, Italy’s new position in the global top ten highlights the continued importance of innovation and intellectual property protection within the Italian economy.
The broader EPO figures also point to strong demand for European patent protection. In 2025, the Office received a record 201,974 European patent applications, surpassing 200,000 applications for the first time and representing a 1.4% increase compared with 2024.
For Italian businesses and innovators looking to grow internationally, these figures underline the increasingly important role of intellectual property protection in supporting innovation and competitiveness across European markets.
