Uruguay is set to enhance its intellectual property landscape by joining the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) after its official ratification on June 11, 2024. This significant step will come into effect on October 4, 2024, signaling a new era for the country's innovation and patent systems.

The PCT, managed by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), allows inventors to secure patents in multiple countries through a single application, simplifying the international patent process. Uruguay’s accession to the PCT will offer local inventors a streamlined path to global markets, reducing associated costs and legal complexities. This move is expected to attract more foreign investors, making it easier and more appealing for them to protect their inventions in Uruguay, which could lead to increased foreign direct investment.

By joining the PCT, Uruguay aligns itself with over 157 other member countries (excluding Uruguay), enhancing its competitive edge in the global innovation sector. This membership also places Uruguay alongside fellow Latin American nations such as Brazil, Chile, and Mexico, promoting deeper collaboration and research in science and technology across the region.

For Uruguayan innovators, businesses, and legal professionals, this development presents new opportunities for international patent protection, likely stimulating further innovation and economic growth within the country. Uruguay's entry into the PCT marks a pivotal moment in its journey towards a more robust and globally integrated IP system.
